Atal Bihari Vajpayee: Journey of a political icon

Vajpayee served as Prime Minister of India thrice (1996, 1998 and 1999). His tenures lasted 13 days, 13 months and a near full five-year term when he went for early elections in 2004 respectively. Born in Gwalior on December 25, 1924, Atal Bihari Vajpayee remained a bachelor. Vajpayee was in jail for a short period for opposing British colonial rule in his early years. He was also the first President of the Bharatiya Janata Party from 1980 to 1986. His parliamentary career spans five decades. He was elected a Lok Sabha MP ten times, and a Rajya Sabha MP twice.
