Train journey to cost more from January 1
On the New Year's eve, the railways announced fare hike across its network, excluding suburban trains, effective from January 1, 2020, according to an order issued on Tuesday. The railways also announced a two paise/km hike in fares of mail/express non-AC trains and four paise/km hike in the fares of AC classes. Premium trains like Shatabdi, Rajdhani and Duronto trains are included in the fare hike.

The government on Monday night declared that General Bipin Rawat will take over as the country’s first-ever Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) or tri-Service chief. The announcement came barely a few hours before he completes his three-year-tenure as the Army chief on December 31. A Delhi court has sentenced expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar to life term for raping a minor girl in UP's Unnao in 2017. The court imposed a fine of Rs 25 lakh on Sengar, which would be given to the victim's family as compensation. On Monday, the court had convicted Sengar and adjourned till Dec 20 the hearing on order for quantum of sentence to Sengar.

CAA protests continue; PM appeals for peace: Top developments
Several protests - some peaceful, some violent - erupted across India on Monday against the police crackdown in Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi and the amended citizenship law as students and political leaders took to the streets. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called these protests "deeply distressing" and appealed for peace.

Bengal stays work on Natl Population Register
An order issued by the Home and Hill Affair Department Census Cell to commissioners of Kolkata and Howrah municipal corporations and all district magistrates said that all activities regarding the preparation and updation of the NPR are stayed in West Bengal. The central government has decided to prepare the NPR by September 2020 to lay the foundation for rolling out a citizens' register across the country.

Unnao rape: Court raps CBI for chargesheet delay
The gang rape case is separate from the rape case in which expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted by the court on Monday. The woman was allegedly gang raped by three other persons on June 11, 2017 in Unnao a few days after the first (Sengar) incident. The trial is yet to commence in the case.

Unnao rape case: Expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar convicted
Expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted on Monday in the rape and murder case of a minor girl in Unnao in 2017. The court, however, acquitted another accused Shashi Singh. The court found the survivor's testimony to be "truthful", "unblemished" and of "sterling" quality. The court will hear arguments on the quantum of sentence on Wednesday.

RBI governor hints at further rate cuts
Hinting at further rate cuts, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das said that the central bank had paused in its rate cuts in December as it was waiting for an opportune time to ease policy. 50 detained students have been released: Police
As many as 50 students, who were detained during protests at the Jamia Millia Islamia University here on Sunday, were released in the early hours of Monday, police said. Of the 50 students, 35 were released from the Kalkaji police station and 15 from the New Friends Colony police station, a senior police officer said.
