The Supreme Court on Thursday scrapped Section 497 (adultery) of the Indian Penal Code calling it unconstitutional. CJI Dipak Misra said that adultery can be a ground for divorce but not a criminal offence. Delivering its judgement, the SC said that unequal treatment of women invites the wrath of the Constitution.
